Green Hydrogen: Revolutionizing the Energy Landscape

Abstract

Green hydrogen, produced through water electrolysis powered by renewable electricity, has emerged as a critical pillar of the global energy transition. This article provides a comprehensive review of green hydrogen production technologies, applications, economic viability, and policy frameworks based on the latest 2025–2026 data. Global low‑emissions hydrogen production reached nearly 1 Mt in 2025, with installed electrolysis capacity doubling to surpass 4 GW. Capital spending on low‑emissions hydrogen projects reached nearly USD 7 billion in 2025, nearly double the 2024 level. Despite significant progress, challenges including high production costs (USD 2.7–6.4/kg unsubsidized globally in 2025), infrastructure gaps, and policy uncertainty continue to impede widespread adoption. This review analyzes the current state of green hydrogen technologies, presents comparative performance data across electrolyzer platforms, examines sectoral applications, and discusses the policy interventions required to unlock the full potential of green hydrogen as a cornerstone of sustainable energy systems.
