The impact of Parental Treatment Methods on Psychological Stress among Secondary School Students in Damazin Locality
Abstract
This study aimed to measure the impact of parenting styles as perceived by adolescents, with their positive (e.g., acceptance, democracy) and negative (e.g., authoritarianism, overprotection) dimensions, on psychological stress with its dimensions (familial, academic, and social) among high school students. A descriptive-analytical approach was adopted, and the study was applied to a simple random sample of (150) male and female high school students in the Damazin locality, Blue Nile State. Two instruments were used for data collection: the Parenting Styles Scale and the Psychological Stress Scale. The results of the regression analysis showed a statistically significant negative impact of positive parenting styles on psychological stress, indicating their significant contribution to reducing stress levels. Conversely, a statistically significant positive impact of negative parenting styles on psychological stress was found, confirming their role in increasing levels of tension and anxiety among students. Accordingly, the study recommended the design and implementation of guidance and awareness programs for parents to promote positive upbringing practices, and to provide psychological support for students in schools to help them develop effective stress-coping strategies.
