Drugs: The Path of Darkness Between Religious Awareness and Societal Loss

Published: 2026-03-08

Abstract

This research paper aims to explore the complex issue of drug abuse from two integrated perspectives: religious awareness as a protective factor and societal loss as a risk factor. The study employs a descriptive analytical methodology to review recent literature and previous studies that have examined the relationship between religiosity and drugs, as well as the role of religious and community institutions in combating this scourge. The findings reveal a "religious paradox" where personal and institutional religiosity demonstrates a preventive effect of up to 18%, yet the absence of effective awareness or its transformation into social stigma can lead to counterproductive outcomes, pushing addicts further into marginalization. The paper discusses data extracted from global studies on the mechanisms of religiosity as a protective factor, and conversely, how societal pressures and stigma can exacerbate the addiction problem. The study concludes that addressing the drug problem requires an integrative approach combining renewed religious awareness focused on compassion and reintegration, with community policies based on scientific, psychological, and social foundations, emphasizing the necessity of involving religious leaders as part of the solution rather than as tools for stigmatization.
