The role of Palestinian media in confronting the narcotics phenomenon: An analytical study of its security, preventive, and awareness-raising dimensions in protecting Palestinian society
Abstract
In Palestine, due to the complex situation on all fronts, the phenomenon of narcotic use and abuse is becoming increasingly dangerous as a result of prevailing political, security, economic, social, and health conditions. Palestinian media stands out as one of the most important tools for community prevention against the scourge of narcotics, through its preventative role in disseminating health and legal awareness to correct prevailing misconceptions, on the one hand, and to promote a culture of societal rejection of narcotic use and trafficking to maintain community security, on the other. This study aims to identify the Palestinian media and its role in narcotic prevention. The central research question is: "What is the role of Palestinian media in narcotic prevention?". The importance of this study lies in its shedding light on the concept of narcotics and preventative media, identifying the roles of Palestinian media in narcotic prevention, reviewing the most prominent challenges they face in their work, and exploring mechanisms to enhance their role in narcotic prevention to achieve community security. The researcher used the descriptive method through literature analysis.The study reached a number of conclusions, the most important of which are: Palestinian society suffers from the health, social, economic, and security consequences of narcotic abuse; various Palestinian media outlets practice the concept of preventative journalism and constitute an essential and important tool in narcotic prevention; Palestinian media face financial, technical, and professional challenges in carrying out their preventative media mission; and for Palestinian media to fulfill its preventative role, measures must be taken to mitigate these challenges. Based on the study's findings, the researchers reached a set of recommendations, the most important of which is the necessity of adopting a specialized national preventative media policy focused on narcotic prevention. Strengthening partnerships between media, security, health, and educational institutions in the field of drug prevention is essential. Empowering media outlets to address the challenges they face in fulfilling their preventative mission against drugs is also necessary.
